Retreat Overview

Guided Meditations
- Each full day opens and closes with a short guided meditation. You do not need to have any meditation experience in order to participate. We acknowledge that the concept of meditation may be intimidating to some of you and will address this concern with kindness and compassion. We encourage you to keep an open mind throughout your ROOTS Retreat experience.
Roots of a Healthy Lifestyle Workshops
- Each full day, you will participate in 4 interactive workshops designed to teach you simple tools to empower your journey to a healthier lifestyle. You can click on each workshop topic within the schedule to learn more.
Gentle Conscious Movement
- Each full day, you will participate in 2 gentle conscious movement sessions. The first session takes place mid-moring and is only about 15 minutes long. The second session is one hour long and consists of very gentle yoga, pilates, tai chi, qi gong, and functional movements designed for everybody, regardless of fitness level or age.
A Strong, Compassionate Community
- A strong community is a very important root of a healthy lifestyle. Your ROOTS retreat is intentionally designed to include a strong community element in a small group setting. You will have daily opportunities to share and discuss your experiences, challenges and triumphs in a safe, compassionate, and supportive environment. You will also have daily opportunities to make a difference in your fellow retreat participants’ lives.
Nutrition & Hydration
- Each day, you will be served three healthy meals. Our nutrition philosophy does not prescribe any particular diet, but vegetarian and vegan options will be available. You will also have the opportunity to choose whether or not you consume alcohol with your dinner. As in all things, balance is key to your health and wellbeing. You will be provided with a glass water bottle at the beginning of your experience. You will learn that not all water is created equal, therefore we will provide Zazen Alkaline Water to ensure that your journey to healhty hydration begins as soon as you arrive at your retreat.

Conscious movement is the first of four physical roots of a healthy lifestyle. We intentionally choose the word "movement", because
If you can’t find any form of exercise that you find palatable, then find a reason to motivate movement in spite of your reticence.
Hydration of the body is crucial for many reasons. It helps regulate our body temperature, deliver nutrients to cells, provide joint lubrication, and allows our organs to function effectively.

The relentless introduction of technology into our lives, our rapidly changing societal expectations (some call these "programs") around success, achievement and acquisition, not to mention the global pandemic, all contribute to countless stresses in our lives.
This process may sound daunting as many of us don't feel compelled to address the parts of ourselves we either do not know exist or are too afraid to face. But those of us brave enough to set out on this journey find it incredibly liberating and rewarding. What's more, the positive changes we make resonnate throughout the rest of our lives and in all of our relationships.
